🪪About Gary B. Larson
Also known in some circles as Garbl.
I’ve worked and volunteered to help people learn about, understand, influence, and use their government services—through clear writing, public service, and community engagement.
For decades, I combined a passion for democracy with a career in journalism and public communication. I studied political science and journalism in college, then reported on local government as a newspaper editor and reporter. Later, I spent 30 years in government communications—translating policies, programs, and public issues into plain language.
Along the way, I’ve volunteered for progressive campaigns and nonprofit organizations, advocated for peace and the environment, supported civil rights and education, and promoted civic participation at every level.
Now, through Plainly, Garbl, I write to continue that work: using words as tools for clarity and action—with compassion, not clutter or deceit. Writing in plain language can be precise and powerful without being stiff.
I live in a Victorian seaport and arts community on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. I make music, always carry a camera, volunteer for good causes, and try to write fiction.

Clarity. Action. Writing that means what it says.
